Klang and Pulao Ketam

Crab Island

Klang is not really a popular destination among tourists coming to Malaysia since it's a small town located at the far end from the capital city of KL.

I came across it the first time when I read about it from a local newspaper.  It featured some interesting spots like mosques, temples, and a church built for more than centuries ago. A co-worker also mentioned about their famous dish, Bak Kut Teh which is a tenderized pork in soy sauce.  I'd really like to try it since not so many restaurants near the center sell non-Halal foods.

This is my one day adventure with my friend Kellani.  Put on my fit-flops, sunglasses, and a scarf for the heat and am ready to go!

We live in Damansara Perdana, so we had to take U86 bus going to Kepong Sentral (2 MYR-27php-$0.60 - July 2014 exchange).

I'd like to post blogs not only to recount and record my travels but to give a step by step guide for backpackers or travelers how to have a great adventure which is not heavy on the pocket.

Here are my tips on how to have a great time in Klang and Pulao Ketam:
If you're coming from Kepong Central, buy a ticket at the counter of KTM train station (one way 5 MYR, 2 way- 10), I suggest that you purchase a 2 way ticket if you're coming back on the same day to save time.

KEPONG KTM SENTRAL
The train will take you to KL Sentral and you have to hop out and transfer to another train which will bring you straight to Klang.

Travel time takes about 75 minutes so just enjoy the ride, sightseeing outside the window.

Upon arrival at the Klang train station, you can already start your walking adventure to these places (distance from each other are not that far but make sure you are properly hydrated since you'll be walking under the heat of the sun most of the time)

Masjid India Muslim Tenku Kelana

This is an Indian-Muslim mosque situated at the heart of little India

*masjid:Arabic term for mosque

If you get lost refer to the signage :)

Jalan Tenku Kelana
~ AKA Little India, the biggest in Malaysia, the place is always alive with Indian music playing in almost any shop you drop by.

Senghuat Bak Kut Teh is one of the famous Bak Kut Teh restaurants in Klang.  Located right under a fly over bridge just across Little India.

Klang Port

If you want to check the small fishing village of Pulao Ketam also known as the Crab Island, you can take a Jetty Boat for 14 MYR 2 way trip.  Travel time is around 40 minutes but the waves are very still so you will have a very minimal chance to be seasick.

In Crab Island, you can rent a bicycle so you can easily go around the village plus it's fun!

Bikes for rent 5 MYR for the whole day just make sure you return it before 6 PM.

cycle through the markets  and seafood restaurants selling their famous mud crabs

houses are built above the water

try their hawker food Lala: fried clams, egg and other spices for only 5 MYR.

The last boat going back to Port Klang is at 6PM so make sure you are already at the boating area by then unless you want to stay for the night.

If you're going back to KL via public transport, just across Port Klang is the KTM station, which is the last stop when you take this part of the KTM railway.

Such a day full of history, food, exercise, and culture. With a budget of 70 MYR or less, you can already enjoy these 2 places: Klang and Pulao Ketam.

Travel Date: July 13, 2014
Travel Duration: Whole Day
Budget breakdown:
Transportation (bus, train, bike, and boat) = 33 MYR
Food (lunch, drinks, snack) = 36.90 MYR
Total: 69.90 MYR.
